Blog Out 09 and Creative Industries Fair!

Firstly…

Blogout!'09

Date and time: 7 March 09, 10.30am – 5pm (at least for the free one)

Location: 8Q Singapore Arts Museum, 8 Queen Street, Singapore 188535

There’s two days. The first is for corporate types and you have to pay for the tickets while the 7th March one is FREE. I’ma be there that day to just listen to the programme, especially about the “Fire your boss! Ways you can turn your blog into a business in 2009” segment. I DO wish to know what else is in store and all that. More info at their website.

MEANWHILE! I went to the Creative Industries Fair on Saturday the 28th!

It was a rather cozy place…

CIF place

Really with all the wooden exterior and all, you totally can’t mistake it for any other fair except for a creative industry one since it’s just so… arty.

That or an IKEA sale.

But it wasn’t that so it was definitely the Creative Industries Fair.

CIF DS

This was Design Singapore‘s booth. The boxes had separate information on it and they were all actually moving on a conveyor belt. Sadly when I inquired about the scholarship, the course I wanted on screenwriting is not considered “multimedia” design and I should try MDA instead. Le sigh. I wonder if MDA or NAC would even qualify me if I can enter TISCH… I DO like making films/stories though.

CIF lion

However, the nice lady there gave me a lion figurine instead!! It came in green or red. Since I didn’t want to build it and keep it as a memory, I shall instead recreate how it would look like using photoshop.

CIF lion done

Did it in a few seconds since I didn’t want to waste too much time on it to see the “general” view on how it would look like. It’s pretty cool!

CIF egg story

This was from Egg Story Digital Arts School. I got canvassed by one of their workers or students or something to learn more about it and… uh I kinda stood there because I DID want to know more. Apparently they have a sculpting course?! Let me see here… ACK! They actually have voice acting too? This wasn’t in the brochure I got! Looks like their list online has more things up but yeah. It’s pretty neat… Now, where to get the moolah for their courses…

Well, I think it’s under SPUR too but how to get it approved from my work place… That’ll be difficult to maneuver. Hmm.

CIF ESMA

HEY! What’s this? A Singapore Media Academy booth? But why does the photo presentation on the screen look OH SO FAMILIAR? Bwuahahahahaha. Also, that’s not me there but my friend. Trust me, I waited a LONG while to see if my pic was in their slides. Oh yes, they’ve got SPUR on too so for those who want to learn and yet also work… You should read up on it on the SMA site!

Sadly, most of the companies that were online who were hiring weren’t there in “booth” form. So you got to check out the WDA website instead and apply to the companies like Lucasfilm Singapore, Koei etc. Ubisoft was there though, HEH. Try to find Assassin’s Creed in the picture of the whole place. I talked to the guy at the booth and apparently he had no idea what a narrative designer is. Le sigh. Most companies there have more openings for programmers or animators/artists but not for story type people.

I mean, I’m willing to learn and all and even there’s a career path for animators to be creative directors and programmers to be the lead director etc but for the ones who write the story line scripts??? 🙁 I didn’t see any for it. Plus since the booth guy didn’t really know much about narrative designers (he knew more about the rest of the openings like programmers/testers/animators/bla), I couldn’t ask him what portfolio would be advisable for its position.

I managed to listen to a talk though on Saturday evening by Mr Olivier De Rotalier, the managing director of Ubisoft, who was a pretty suave looking person with a French accent. Bwur hur hur. Pretty interesting and there was quite a lot of guys listening to him being pretty much interested in the whole programmer/animator line. By the way, they’re having openings for QC testers for games, just so you know if you’re interested.

Meanwhile, I managed to sign up at the Games Exchange Alliance booth since Snowheart was there with the winner of the Cosplay Challenge competition who was wearing his costume. Um, this might seem complicated to figure out why there was cosplay there but it’s cause Snowheart’s management is part of it who manage the events AND also there’s a game development company starting up too from their studio and all.

Uh, in any case… Personae Studios are looking for people too and I was helping out the GXA booth by signing up for their Games Resources Portal. Hopefully, someone might want a writer somehow…

And that’s it for CIF! Raaaaaaaaar.
