{"id":4857,"date":"2012-07-30T09:46:28","date_gmt":"2012-07-30T01:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seriouslysarah.com\/blog\/?p=4857"},"modified":"2020-09-17T22:17:16","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T14:17:16","slug":"where-to-buy-a-ukulele-in-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seriouslysarah.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/30\/where-to-buy-a-ukulele-in-singapore\/","title":{"rendered":"Where to buy a ukulele in Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I get a lot of hits of &#8220;where to get cheap ukulele in Singapore&#8221; or &#8220;where to buy ukuleles in Singapore&#8221; because of my <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seriouslysarah.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/20\/buying-a-ukulele-in-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buying a Ukulele in Singapore<\/a><\/strong> post so I&#8217;ve decided to list down my choice of stores.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t see the store you bought from, it&#8217;s probably because I haven&#8217;t been there before or that I don&#8217;t think the price was worth the ukulele. Feel free to comment below the brands that the store has if you&#8217;ve been to one that is good. Click their names to get to their website!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Note: You have to ask the shop themselves about the price of their ukuleles. I merely look-see-ed at them and noted that the price was <span style=\"color: #000000;\">value for money<\/span> for the type of ukulele or brand they sell. Plus, they might have sales or discount during the time you decide to visit any of the stores.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>EDIT: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seriouslysarah.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/27\/how-to-test-a-ukulele\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HOW TO TEST A UKULELE<\/a><\/strong> since some of you are newbies and have no visual guide how to check your purchase.<\/p>\n<p>My first choice:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukulelemovement.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ukulele Movement<\/a> <span style=\"color: #999999;\"><del>66 Kampong Bugis, Level 5, Kallang Rivergreen Building, Singapore 338987 Tel: +65 6299 0580 (CURRENTLY at: 809, French Road, #02-41, Kitchener Complex, Singapore 200809<\/del><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><del>It&#8217;s at a building with a lady with a moustache painted near the top. Take the lift to get into the shop. This is the best ukulele shop in Singapore because it&#8217;s THE ukulele shop that brought it all in at first.\u00c2\u00a0<\/del><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><del>Edit: Closest MRT station is Lavendar and then it&#8217;s just a walk from there<\/del>.<\/span> <strong>EDIT 2 (17 Sep): The shop is still open but has moved, check their website for current location.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Makala, Kala, Anueanue etc. The brands in this store are all well recognized for their craftsmanship. If you&#8217;re not buying your ukulele here, they still have accessories like ukulele straps, music books and dvds. Compared to Yamaha, their books and dvd range is more extensive since it&#8217;s specifically for the ukulele.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and your purchase of a ukulele usually comes with a padded gig bag compared to others who might not. (Unless you buy the super cheap budget ukulele, those come with their own bag.) They have concerts available too. FYI, Prillante are the ones with the cartoon designs on them. Buy your tuner here since they have cheap ones.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.svguitars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SV Guitars<\/a> Peninsula Shopping Centre, 3 Coleman Street B1-16 Singapore Tel: +65-63383371<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nCountess, Eddy Finn and Puka. They have two other branches but I don&#8217;t know if those other two stock on ukuleles. Countess is a Korean brand most often seen online on fashion\/hipsters photoshoot websites etc cause it has cute designs on it. The shop has concerts besides sopranos too. Same building as Davis Guitar. Okay for just playing for fun. Buy for those who want to decorate their own ukuleles or playing occasionally. Just skip to Peninsula Plaza if you want something more serious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ranking Sports &amp; Music: Bras Basah Complex Blk 231, Bain Street #03-39\/49\/51\/53 Tel: (+65) 6336 7887<\/strong><br \/>\nTGM and some other brand. Mostly TGM. The $39 TGM which is of good quality sells out fast so you&#8217;d be left with the more expensive models there. Nowadays though, they&#8217;ve fitted their ukuleles with Aquila strings and they&#8217;re labelled with what wood their construction is! The glass cabinets of the store has some of the most expensive ukuleles made of koa wood too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guitargallery.com.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guitar Gallery Pte Ltd<\/a> Parklane Shopping Mall, 35 Selegie Road #02-02, Tel:(+65)6338-7768<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nFluke and Flea ukuleles! They&#8217;re pricier than other brands because they&#8217;re not constructed the usual way, it&#8217;s not all wood! You can tell it&#8217;s a Fluke or a Flea from a far cause of their shape. Totally durable too. Check the website for their catalogue.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maestroguitars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maestro Acoustic Lounge<\/a> <del>*SCAPE Mall, 2 Orchard Link, #02-35, Tel:\u00c2\u00a0(+65) 6820 1698\u00c2\u00a0 <\/del><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(EDIT: 9 March 2014: They closed it in SCAPE but they have their store in Esplanade with their range of ukuleles and guitars)<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.staggmusic.com\/en\/products\/guitars\/traditional_stringed_instruments\/ukuleles\/graphic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stagg<\/a> colour ukuleles and Maestro&#8217;s own line of ukuleles. They have a custom shop at Peninsula plaza but you need to call them up for an appointment. You best call them up to check if they do have any concerts ukuleles at this branch since they bring in more sopranoes for Maestro brand and Stagg. Although it IS called The Pianoman&#8217;s Shop, they do stock on some ukuleles. If you&#8217;re in this part of Singapore and think the other stores are too far from you, they have a small range but a good one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it for the stores! So far if you&#8217;re in central or in the east, you have more range in getting them. I don&#8217;t usually venture to the north or west side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BONUS TIPS if you&#8217;re a new player:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy a tuner<\/li>\n<li>Get a chord book, those are useful. Either buy an app or a book (my preference Hal Leonard Chord Finder)<\/li>\n<li>Get an optional ukulele strap<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your gig bag has a pocket or some place to fit in your tuner and chord book too.<\/li>\n<li>Book of songs or tabs you print out from the internet to practice.
