FeedMenang2 – In which we went to Penang to eat

A month or so ago we went to Penang to just eat.

REALLY WE DID.

Hence why our hashtag was a pun on FeedMenang2. I didn’t go to the first trip, just the second.

Anyway, our hotel was the Cititel Penang and it was the most convenient hotel to stay at since we mostly walked around to get to the food places.

Tips if you want to go for a weekender in Penang, install Grab. We used that to get from the airport to our hotel. It’s around 20-30 minutes journey from the airport to Cititel. After that it was walking for food for us.

BAM. Char kway teow from Bee Hwa Cafe (10 Lebuh Dickens, George Town, Penang Island). It is so good and that place also has good curry mee too. FYI, the food stuff in this post is Halal, so yeah.

We drank pat poh which is something like cincau but… DIFFERENT? It’s sweet, nice and cold in the heat of Penang.

Our agenda was to hit many food places in Penang.

This is muar chee near the “famous” chendol too.

I chose the original to share. Ah, it is so lovely since it is properly coated with the sugar and peanuts.

This is the indoor seating of the famous Penang Chendol (475, Jalan Penang, 10050 Georgetown, Penang).

You will see tourists all lining up outside to try the chendol. Here’s a cheatcode. GO INTO THE INDOOR SEATING.

Well, if there is space just go in there. The various workers from all the stalls there will ask you want you want to eat and they’ll serve it to you so you don’t have to queue outside unless you like that kind of thing.

Or if you want to instagram that you’re there.

HUARGH! Penang laksa! Yess delicious. I don’t even know why I have to describe it, it’s sweet yet tangy and the soup makes you want to keep drinking it.

FWOOOOM!!! All these unnecessary sound effects is because it is GOOD.

This is the Penang chendol. It is alright in a sense that it’s not bad but you’re surrounded by so much food. OH NO, OH NO.

LINE CLEAR! (Beside 161 & 177 Penang Road, George Town, 10000 George Town, Pulau Pinang)

THIS IS THE NASI KANDAR. JUST CHOOSE “KUAH CAMPUR”.

OH MY GAAAAH. Spicy as heck but flavourful, make sure you don’t mix up the wrong nasi kandar shop since Line Clear is way inside.

We had sup kambing at Sup Hameed (48, Jalan Penang, George Town, 10000 George Town, Pulau Pinang) BUT BECAUSE we do not have the original Ramly Burger in Singapore, we bought this from a stall that was set up next to it too.

AAAAAAAHHH HOW DAREEEEE IT IS DELICIOUS.

WHY IS IT NOT AVAILABLE IN SINGAPORE.

Well, I know why, it’s cause Ramly burger patties are “illegal” in Singapore due to imports but that means it’s more precious when we visit Malaysia to see our friends too and eat a good Ramly burger.

Do note the cute paper weight in shape of a burger too.

Oh and this stall seemed popular and there’s some food delivery service in Penang that I don’t know of but it is like deliveroo etc? There was a deliveryman who got them burgersssss.

I can lament more on this but ahhh nevermind.

FYI, THEY ARE EVEN BETTER THAN THE FREAKING RAMLY RESTAURANT at the rest stops around Pagoh. I weep at their culinary expertise in making these burgers.

We had a bit of culture in the middle of our eating too, like seeing the Kapitan Keling Mosque and the actual street art of Penang.

This was Gerak Budaya, (78 Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, George Town, 10200 Penang) a bookshop that has Malaysian and independent books besides the “usual”.

In our walking, we had to have our tea and cakes so we got to visit the most hipster longest cafe in Penang aka the Chinahouse (
153 & 155 Beach Street, 183B Victoria Street, 10300 George Town, Penang).

There is NOT network at all because the cafe is so long, you’re too deep inside to get any signal. The wifi is sporadic so just go there to enjoy everything else and try to instagram when you’re out, okay?

Penang is a pretty beautiful place when you walk around too. So don’t just keep looking at your phone and uh, take pictures with your phone.

OK TIME TO EAT AGAIN.

This is Mee Mamak Goreng at Seng Lee Coffeeshop. Apparently this is the famous one too and they took MINUTES TO JUST MAKE IT.

And then you eat it so fast too.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA.

Oh gosh, this was quite a ride.

We bought souvenirs like actual Penang Belacan and Beh Teh Saw biscuits too. Basically, go with friends who like to eat if you want to journey and walk your way through an eat list in Penang.

I wish to return to eat more of the char kway teow, Ramly burger and see more of the island.

Maybe go to more of the museums. We went to Wonderfood and it was SO FUN.

Anyway go look see our video below to see our trip.
