It’s the International Year of the Family !

International Year of the Family 2014

It’s the international year of the family. I know, or rather I didn’t know that until now. I do know that there are international food days and don’t really pay much attention to that but hey look! Year of the family sounds nice and aww, non?

It’s by National Day Parade 2014 and MSF and from 5 May to 16 June 2014, everyone can submit a Big-Hearted Story of a person or family that has made a difference in their lives. Ok kind of too late for you readers who just read this post for the story part now but do read on.

This year, IYF seeks to encourage big-heartedness within the community. It hopes for everyone to share the warmth of their family with others around them. As such, through the Awards, members of the public will have a great opportunity to express their heartfelt thanks to those who have made a difference in their world!

We would like to invite you to support IYF by taking part in the Awards and saying thanks to a special someone in this meaningful way! It could be a neighbour, colleague’s family, volunteer, teacher, friend, or even a stranger!

It might be too late for you to join the contest at the Big Hearted Family Awards website. ACTUALLY, it isn’t if you’re reading this in the morning. DEADLINE is before midnight 16 June (11.59pm) so just from the heart, I am sure the words will come out for you to say and nominate special someone/ family for the Big-Hearted Family Awards.

Nominate them and you might win NDP preview/actual day tickets too!

QUICK, QUICK, DO IT!

Remember, family doesn’t have to be blood related, it’s who you deem family or someone special to you.

You can also check out Care & Share , info which you can also help out in the community in Singapore. Yes. I know such aww togetherness and whatnot. You can donate or volunteer your services to various communities from there if you don’t know how to start.

You do realize, that not all volunteerism means going to an old folk’s place and cleaning or whatever right? You can contribute what skills you have to various groups that you want to help out.

That’s how it all starts in also being ‘special’ to others.

I help out in the cat side with Love Kuching by making videos and sometimes taking pictures which helps publicize the group and thus is also caring for the community.

Need an example for how to nominate someone?

Well, I would write a bit about my parents. It’s not ONE someone but ehh, since it’s my blog I can write it. NYER HUR HUR. I know, that’s kind of like a cheatcode. But yeah, I can’t choose.

They’re both inspiring and in the medical line too. No, not as doctors but as the support who also work with patients or health care workers. Amidst all that, they also care for the family… AKA MINE. Ok, maybe this isn’t a really awesome example of what to write in your nomination but really, they had been there always and are super caring.

Sometimes if they see people on the streets needing help, like an elderly man not being able to stand up and lying on the street while others were just walking by (?!) they checked up on him and took him to the doctor and then to his home. Or staying with lost kids until their parents managed to find them. I don’t know, it might be also as simple as making sure that my grandparents are also ok and checking up on them too.

Yeah, it takes time and energy and effort and they DO IT. Which is totally inspiring.

Yeaaaah!!

Lion Dash 2014! Aka the end of Tampines Bike Park

Up and downhill

8 June 2014. That’s the last day of operations for Tampines Bike Park.

That’s also the date of my first Lion Dash. After Lion Dash, the place is closed for it’s going to be redeveloped into houses.

Kinda sad though because there are so many freaking buildings in Tampines that it’s getting very claustrophobic there and wow, this bike park is actually very nice?

There was also an area where the extreme sports competition for mountain biking was held before and I could see people biking up and down the slopes, enjoying them before it would be closed forever.

I don’t know where else in Singapore you’d have an outdoor arena like that.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2!

Spider-Man 2!

I got to watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after being invited by Sony Pictures Singapore. THANKS SONY PICTURES!

This is going to be a SHORT review because no spoilers.

Firstly, if possible just go with the 3d option. This time the 3d isn’t a gimmick thing, it actually really works when you’re with him (Spider-Man). Just go. If you’re watching this movie, you might as well go for the 3d option because it is SO well done.

Secondly, ok this story has a VERY awesome soundtrack.

Some songs might be hipstery or well, from the trailer I think you can tell that there is a lot of dubstep going on here. Otherwise, there might be some songs or rather theme songs that make you go “Whaaaaaaaaat”?

Stan Lee of course makes an appearance and you can’t miss him this time because it’s so in your face that it is funny.

How do I describe Spidey 2. Ahhh…

 

Spidey 2, is GOOD.

There are some ACTION scenes that feels like it is just shoved into some points so that it won’t be called Spider-Man 2 aka Romance Adventures of a Webslinger but otherwise, just “Ahhhh” it is good. The actors and actresses are ALL very good.

From the trailers though, you can tell the thug is really “THUG” like he came out of the comics or cartoons being so over the top and so stereotypically Russian with bad accent.

There’s also a super stereotypical German scientist that it made us think of this. Ja? JA!

Also, I prefer this Spidey than the previous one because he is actually funny and witty even if there are tragic sides to him.

All the other geek sites are so going to tell you how it matches up with the comics and I won’t say it because. Really. It’s. Super. Spoilery. Also, lots of references to OTHER popculture things. Like. Harry Potter.

You might also notice a bunch of Sony products used in the movie for obvious reasons. In one scene, you would wonder if the laptop IS THAT DURABLE and if it is, wow ok. I would like it. Not to mention the internet connection for it.

In summary, just watch it. Those who read the comics/watched the cartoons will have quite a bunch of reactions for this movie. Those who don’t have a background will still go “WOW”.

When the movie finished, we went out of the cinema and talked a HECK LOAD about it and yes, it goes to show that this Spider-Man 2 is really going to go up the charts when it’s released in Singapore on May 1st!

Go book your tickets with your friends because yes. Yes, go with them to watch this for reasons.

Ps. If you stick around in the credits, you might notice a Wade Wilson. Yes, he is a real person but for those comic/cartoon fans, you might know the irony of this.

The bookstore is not what it is today without every single one of you who has loved us, hated us, and lightly nudged (or forcibly pushed) us to move forward — to be better, climb higher and dream bigger.

We got a lot of rice. And loot!

1 million KG challenge

I kept seeing the ad for the 1 Million Kg Challenge on my facebook and I went “Oooh” when I clicked on it. The Health Promo Board is having a new campaign where people can win stuff when they lose weight.

The launch was the weekend of 15 and 16th March at Ngee Ann City. I had been waiting to know where the weigh in kiosks were going to be at and so this was the best place to get it.

It’s actually a campaign that promotes fitness and all that. The only pissy bit is that there ARE requirements if you want to join this challenge which is the whole BMI thing.

If you’re too under their BMI range, you can’t sign up, if you’re too over you can’t sign up either. I guess it’s for their own disclaimer safety because this is a general challenge and they can’t do tailored recommendations for those who are too under or over the BMI range to join this.

Really too bad though because I know there are friends who are over their BMI target range and want to do this. Plus, BMI is not the exactly the best way to measure because everyone has a different body type. ANYWHO, this ain’t a health blog, so y’all go research on what I mean since I’m gonna just continue about the event itself!

Spoiler alert: I am within their BMI challenge range so I can join this.

Detecting metal?

We went to the national museum for the Total Defence 30th anniversary! There were so many cool things to do even before entering the museum.

Like playing with metal detectors and eating army rations or checking out their weaponry.

Unfortunately, by the time you read this, the special exhibition is oveeer.

OH AND BY THE WAY. I AM VERILY GLAD, my two teams in N.E.mation? THEY BOTH GOT INTO TOP THREE. The champion and the 1st runner up but that shall be a different post…

Anyway, Saturday really was random adventures day.

It’s 30 Years of Total Defence!

I got invited to the Total Defence media conference the other day and I wondered if I should attend. OBVIOUSLY, I said yes hahahaha. Thanks AsiaPRWerkz for inviting me! Anyway, it’s about this year’s events cause it’s the 30th anniversary of total defence!

This is going to be a LONG post because there IS a lot of exciting things happening.

Tote-ally cool.

I tote-ally liked this bag. A lot of others did too because of the pun. Inside was a nifty file of press releases, postcards and a Happy Feet figurine (you’ll see in the later part of this post).
